LONDON: The Jordanian border force and the Anti-Narcotics Department thwarted an attempt to smuggle narcotics using two drones along its western front bordering Syria.
On Sunday, forces shot down the drones within Jordanian territory and seized a large quantity of drugs, according to the Petra news agency.
In April, authorities arrested multiple drug dealers in a nationwide crackdown, seizing firearms, drones and remotely guided balloons, along with quantities of narcotic pills, hashish and crystal meth.
Criminal networks have long attempted to exploit Jordan as a transit point for smuggling drugs that are typically bound for Gulf countries from Syria, Lebanon and Iraq. Smugglers are increasingly employing drones and balloons to transport narcotics into Jordan from neighboring countries.
Authorities have highlighted their commitment to preventing the smuggling and infiltration of narcotics, and to protecting national security, Petra added.
