  • Latest accolades bring tally to 171 since relaunch

LONDON: Arab News has won eight Awards of Excellence at the Society of News Design’s 47th Annual Creative Competition, extending its total international creative award tally to 171 since the newspaper’s relaunch in 2018.

Founded in 1979 in the US as the Society of Newspaper Design, the Society of News Design’s annual competition is regarded as one of the leading global benchmarks for visual journalism, recognizing excellence across story design, illustration, infographics and multiplatform storytelling.

Arab News was recognized across the print, digital, illustration and portfolio categories, underscoring the breadth of its visual storytelling and design-led journalism.

Among the winning entries were: “A Safe Harbor for the Dugong,” a story about conservation efforts to protect the large herbivorous marine mammals, which won in the Story Page Design, Print category; “The Feud Over Falafel,” an interactive, long-form Deep Dive exploring the history and cultural significance of falafel, which won in the Story Page Design, Digital category; and “A Small Bird With a Big Story,” a story examining the vital role quails play in the Saudi Arabian ecosystem, which won in the Line of Coverage, Climate & Environment, Print category.

The paper also won Awards of Excellence for “The Celebrities Taking a Stand” in the Illustration, Social Issues category, which highlighted the positions of notable personalities on the war on Gaza, and “Netanyahu’s 2025 Gains Under Threat” in the Illustration, Opinion category, for an image that accompanied a year-end piece analyzing the domestic and international challenges facing the Israeli prime minister heading into the new year. Both were in-house illustration entries.

Further wins came in Line of Coverage for the “Eye on AI” series in the Special Topic: AI category, as well as two portfolio awards for the Green & Blue series, one in the Individual: Single Topic Story Page Design Portfolio category and the other in the Single Topic: Environment category.

The recognition highlights the continued investment by Arab News in design and visual storytelling across platforms, from climate and environment coverage to explanatory graphics, opinion illustration and ambitious page design.

The latest wins add to the growing list of international honors awarded to Arab News and reflect the publication’s continued focus on the combination of strong reporting with standout presentation under Editor-in-Chief Faisal J. Abbas, who has overseen the newspaper’s digital transformation.

Other work previously recognized includes special projects such as the Arab News 50th anniversary edition; “The Kingdom vs. Captagon” deep dive; and the “Paris 2024 Olympic Games” special edition.
