RIYADH: Saudi Arabia strongly condemned on Tuesday a drone attack targeting Khartoum International Airport.
The drone was shot down by Sudan’s air defenses on Monday as it approached the capital's main airport from the south and caused no damage or casualties, airport officials said.
Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry said the Kingdom reiterated its call for the preservation of Sudan’s unity, its legitimate institutions, the well-being of its people, and its security and stability.
It also emphasized the importance of keeping civilian sites and vital infrastructure out of the country’s conflict.
The Sudanese military has been at war with a paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023, when the RSF stormed the capital.
The Kingdom called on all parties to de-escalate, immediately cease violations, and respect the commitments made in the Jeddah Declaration signed on May 11, 2023 regarding the protection of civilians and civilian objects, and adherence to international humanitarian law.
The Kingdom also called on Sudan’s neighbors to respect the country’s sovereignty and independence, and prevent their territories from being used as launch pads for attacks.
Sudan’s Information Ministry has said the airport would return to operations after routine safety procedures.
