A fire erupted in a Thai cargo vessel at the Jeddah Islamic Port Wednesday, but no injuries were reported.
The blaze continued late into the night as Civil Defense firefighters attempted to douse the flames using carbon dioxide to cut off oxygen to the hull.
The ship was registered to Thailand and carrying hardware. It was docked at the port. However, Saher Tahlawi, director general of the port, said the fire is confined only to the ship. No other vessels were damaged and there were no injuries.
“The vessel had arrived from Thailand, and after noticing a fire, rescue teams (started putting it out), but instead of using the water in traditional manner they are using carbon dioxide to prevent the flow of air into vessel to contain the fire,” Tahlawi said.
Tahlawi also said, “that rescue teams didn’t use water as precautionary measure to prevent adding more weight on the ship that can lead to sinking.”
He also said that damage estimates can’t be determined until an investigation is completed.
Civil defense officials couldn’t be reached for the comment.
