Art Basel Qatar reveals curator, theme

DUBAI: Art Basel Qatar has announced new details for its upcoming second edition, including the appointment of Iraqi-born curator Wassan Al-Khudhairi as artistic director and the unveiling of the fair’s curatorial theme.

Based in New York, Al-Khudhairi is widely recognized for her work across contemporary art institutions and biennials. She previously served as the founding director of Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, overseeing its opening in 2010, and is currently a partner at The Curatorial / Office.

For the 2027 edition, Al-Khudhairi has developed the theme “between/بين,” which will shape the fair’s artistic program and gallery presentations.

The concept explores the idea of existing “between” places, identities, histories and artistic mediums, framing these intersections as spaces of dialogue and creative possibility rather than uncertainty.

The fair will continue the curated format introduced during its inaugural edition, with participating galleries presenting focused solo exhibitions responding to the central theme.

Art Basel Qatar also opened gallery applications for the 2027 event this week. The fair will again take place across Msheireb Downtown Doha, including venues at the Doha Design District and M7 cultural forum.

The organizers said the Special Projects section would expand further with immersive presentations and cross-disciplinary installations.

Preview days for Art Basel Qatar 2027 are scheduled for Jan. 26 and 27, with the fair opening to the public from Jan. 28 to 30.
