MAKKAH: The Roads General Authority has implemented road-cooling projects at three Al-Mashaaer Al-Mugaddassah Metro sites in Makkah.
Spanning 14,000 sq. meters, the initiative aims to improve the transportation environment and enhance pilgrim comfort during the Hajj season.
The specialized road-cooling technology lowers surface temperatures by around 15 C using materials designed to reduce heat absorption and block solar radiation.
This infrastructure upgrade helps reduce heat and improve the surrounding environment at key transportation hubs and high-density pedestrian areas.
The authority also launched a road tent initiative on Hijrah Road linking Makkah and Madinah as part of efforts to provide a safe and comfortable environment for pilgrims traveling between the holy cities.
The authority said the initiative aims to enhance the experience of pilgrims and Umrah performers through an air-conditioned tent equipped with full amenities.
These include light meals and cold beverages provided in partnership with SASCO, in addition to awareness and guidance materials on road safety.
These efforts build on the Kingdom’s position as a global leader in road network connectivity, supporting smooth traffic flow and ensuring safe and comfortable travel for pilgrims during the Hajj season.
Through this initiative, the authority reaffirmed its commitment to achieving the goals of the road sector program. These include reaching sixth place globally in the road quality index by 2030, reducing road fatalities to fewer than five per 100,000 people, and expanding road network coverage under international road safety standards while increasing capacity.
In another report, the authority recorded the passage of more than 70,000 vehicles on roads leading to Makkah as part of operational efforts to facilitate pilgrim movement during the Hajj season.
The authority affirmed its continued field and operational readiness to improve traffic efficiency across the road network leading to the holy city.
