CAIRO: Egypt has collected about 729,344 metric tons of locally grown wheat since its domestic procurement season opened two weeks ago, official data showed on Thursday.
The cumulative ‌intake from ‌local farmers is ‌13 percent ⁠ahead of the same ⁠period in 2025 but 26.9 percent below 2024 levels.
Egypt collected 644,814 tons by ⁠the same date ‌in ‌2025 and 998,796 tons in ‌2024. The government ‌procures local wheat at premium prices to reduce imports while maintaining subsidized ‌bread supply.
Over 69 million people ⁠receive ⁠subsidized bread in Egypt. The country aims to collect 5 million tons of local wheat this year.
The harvest season runs from April 15 through August 15.
