Nearly a century ago, the founder of modern Saudi Arabia, King Abdulaziz, and American businessman Charles Crane laid the groundwork for a strategic partnership that would shape the future of both nations.

The 1933 concession agreement with Standard Oil of California marked a turning point, leading to the creation of Aramco, the largest oil company in the world, and ushering in a new era of collaboration in energy, commerce, and education. Over the decades, this relationship deepened, with US companies playing a pivotal role in the early development of the Kingdom and continuing to do so today.

Education, a cornerstone of progress, became a key element of this partnership. Beginning in the early 1970s, thousands of Saudi students, myself included, pursued higher education at leading American universities. This investment in human capital not only advanced individual careers but also elevated the Kingdom on the global stage.

These alumni returned with knowledge, expertise, and a global perspective, driving Saudi Arabia’s transformation into a leading global energy nation, a member of the G20, and one of the world’s top economies. The vision of Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, encapsulated in Vision 2030, builds upon these foundations, charting a bold course for unprecedented economic and social reforms.

Against this backdrop of strategic partnership and shared progress, I experienced a personal story that reflects the enduring goodness of the American people and the strength of the bond between our nations.

Nearly 30 years ago, during a visit to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, I lost my cherished gold class ring — a symbol of my academic journey and personal milestones. Despite my efforts, it seemed lost forever. That is, until a remarkable series of events unfolded just a month ago.

While at home in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, I received an unexpected email from Kevin Klein. Kevin shared that his father, Dan Klein, had found my ring many years ago and had kept it safe, unsure how to return it. The details inscribed on the ring, including my name and university, allowed Kevin to locate me using modern communication tools.

The email was a delightful surprise, and I replied immediately, expressing my heartfelt gratitude and requesting the ring’s return. Kevin and Dan kept their promise and ensured the ring was safely delivered to me. Holding it again after so many years brought immense joy and reminded me of the enduring power of integrity and kindness.

Their extraordinary thoughtfulness — safeguarding the ring for decades and even covering the shipping costs — deeply moved me. Their actions were a testament to the values of honesty, generosity, and compassion.

This experience brought back fond memories of my years in the US, studying at institutions like the American University and Harvard. Beyond academic knowledge, my time there taught me invaluable lessons in humanity and friendship. Many of my closest friends are Americans, and I have maintained strong connections with them since my college days.

On a broader scale, this personal story reflects the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Saudi Arabia and the US. It serves as a reminder of the mutual respect and shared values that have defined our partnership through decades of change.

As the US continues its journey under new leadership, I am hopeful that our two nations will strengthen this bond, working together to promote peace, advance sustainable energy, and drive global economic growth.
