Who’s Who: Amr Atiah, vice president at King Abdullah University for Science and Technology

Amr Atiah was appointed vice president of campus and community at King Abdullah University for Science and Technology in June this year.

In this role, Atiah is responsible for delivering comprehensive campus and community services across the university. His duties encompass the development and implementation of strategies for efficient campus and community management in alignment with KAUST’s goals, vision, mission and values.

His role also involves overseeing all facilities management responsibilities for all projects across KAUST, maintenance, operations, janitorial services, waste management, space planning, accommodation and events management.

Additionally, he focuses on community development and engagement, covering retail, catering, recreation, daycare, logistics, transport, travel, community communications and customer experience.

Prior to this appointment, Atiah served as KAUST’s director of special projects from January 2022 to May 2024. He played a pivotal part in the planning, design and construction of the world’s largest coral nursery in collaboration with NEOM under Saudi Vision 2030, which included awarding a $200-million construction contract.

From February 2020 to December 2021, Atiah was the director of facilities management in operations and maintenance. His responsibilities included managing the operations and maintenance of more than 3,700 residential units, updating the master plan, optimizing contracts, space planning and project management.

From 2012 to 2020, Atiah held several leadership positions at KAUST, including in labs design and development, projects and construction management, as well as facilities management. During his tenure, he established teams and drove cost optimization through organizational restructuring and energy savings, resulting in annual cost savings of more than $5 million.

From 2002 to 2012, Atiah’s career included roles at Saudi Aramco as an instrumentation engineer and various leadership positions at Ras Tanura Refinery. He was sponsored by Saudi Aramco for an 18-month internship at Emerson Process Management in Houston in the US, where he worked as an applications engineer.

He has been a key member in establishing the sustainability committee and the KAUST Smart Initiative, setting sustainability targets and measurement metrics, and leading the rollout of various smart technology proof of concepts, including wayfinding, smart parking, and smart conference rooms. Atiah also contributed to the design of KAUST’s first Smart Home, piloting several smart and environmental technologies.

Atiah holds an MBA in leadership studies from Baker College, Michigan, US, and a bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering from Louisiana State University, US.

He has also attended leadership programs at London Business School and INSEAD.

Atiah is part of the Mohammed bin Salman Foundation, or MISK, 2030 Leaders program and serves as a board member in one of KAUST’s startup companies, Talon Dust Control.

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s King Salman received a written message from the President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro concerning relations between the two countries.

The message was received by Deputy Minister for International Multilateral Affairs Abdulrahman Al-Rassi during a meeting with Venezuela’s ambassador to the Kingdom David Velasquez Caraballo in Riyadh.

Saudi-Venezuelan relations and ways to enhance and develop them in all fields were reviewed during the meeting. Topics of common interest were also discussed.

RIYADH: Sri Lanka’s government will allow visa-free entry for Saudi Arabia citizens from Oct. 1, the Adviser to the Ministry of Tourism Harin Fernando was reported as saying on Thursday.

Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Saudi Arabia Ameer Ajwad told Arab News: “The landmark decision to provide visa-free access to Sri Lanka for Saudi citizens will serve as a catalyst to boost tourism and enhance business exchanges between Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia.”

Ajwad added that it would enhance “people-to people contacts” and comes as the two nations celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations this year.

In its announcement on Thursday, the Sri Lanka government granted visa-free access to citizens from 35 countries.

They include the UK, China, US, India, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Australia, Denmark, Poland, Kazakhstan, UAE, Nepal, Indonesia, Russia and Thailand.

The list includes Malaysia, Japan, France, Canada, Czech Republic, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Israel, Belarus, Iran, Sweden, South Korea, Qatar, Oman, Bahrain and New Zealand.

Saudi Arabia is the third-largest source of tourists for Sri Lanka, according to statistics released in July by the latter’s tourism development authority.

The Sri Lanka Embassy has helped promote the island nation as a destination, including showcasing its tourism products at the Riyadh Travel Fair 2024 from May 27 to 29.

BAGHDAD: Saudi foreign minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan met with Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani during an official visit to Baghdad on Thursday, state news agency SPA reported.

During the meeting at the presidential palace, both officials reviewed bilateral ties and discussed ways to strengthen cooperation across various fields.

They also addressed several regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Prince Faisal conveyed the wishes of Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for further progress and continued prosperity for the government and people of Iraq.

RIYADH: British breeders Yas Falcons sold four birds on the 10th night of the 2024 International Falcon Breeders Auction, fetching a total of $66,400.

The auction featured leading breeding farms from 19 countries and took place at the Saudi Falcon Club’s headquarters in Malham, north of Riyadh.

The night began with the sale of a gyr taba chick for $10,666, followed by another which reached $14,133.

The evening continued with the sale a gyr shaheen chick for $20,266 and concluded with a second for which the bidding started at $10,666 and which eventually sold for $21,333.

This year’s International Falcon Breeders Auction continues until Saturday.

KSrelief provides heart and brain care in Yemen and Indonesia

RIYADH: The Kingdom’s aid agency KSrelief is providing several heart and brain health programs in Yemen and Indonesia, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Thursday.

In the Mukalla district of Yemen’s Hadramout governorate, the project started on Aug. 17 and will run until Aug. 24 as a part of the “Saudi Pulse” program for heart diseases.

KSrelief’s medical team has already performed 25 specialized surgical procedures.

Also in Yemen, KSrelief is in the final stages of a volunteer neurosurgery project in Aden, which started on Aug. 16 and runs until Aug. 23.

There are 16 volunteers from various medical fields working in partnership with the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen.

The medical team has examined 102 patients and performed nine operations.

In Indonesia the project ran from Aug. 7 to 16, with 23 volunteers carrying out 32 open-heart operations and 60 catheterization procedures.
