DUBAI: Wes Ball, known for directing dystopic flicks including “Maze Runner” and “Ruin,” wasn’t fully on board when he was first approached to helm “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”, the latest instalment in the sci-fi franchise that has spawned 10 films. 

 

 

“I was skeptical,” Ball told Arab News. “I’m a big fan of this franchise. I grew up on the original (1968) one. I love the previous three movies (the reboot series that began in 2011). What Andy Serkis did and what Matt Reeves did in those movies, they're distinct; they're incredible movies. And I was questioning whether there was a need for a follow up. 

“I wasn't really into the idea until we figured out this concept that allowed us to be brave enough to go our own direction and not feel the need to be so tied to the previous movies,” he continued. “Of course, there's a lot of love and respect (for) the previous movies, but we wanted to do something new and fresh and original — have a reason to exist, and not just to do another one for the sake of it. So we tried really hard to come up with a story and a group of characters that felt new and different and would be a worthy addition to what's now been 10 movies over 35 years.”

“Kingdom” is intended as a sequel to 2017’s “War of the Planet of the Apes” — the third film in the rebooted series — but is set nearly 300 years after its events. 

Over those three centuries, ape civilizations have grown and they have become the dominant species on Earth. Humans, meanwhile, have faded and become an “echo” of their ancestors, regressing into a more feral, primitive form. 

Against this backdrop, “Kingdom” tells the coming-of-age story of a young ape called Noa (Owen Teague) as he goes up against the tyrannical ape leader Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand), aided by a young woman named Mae (Freya Allan).

Before filming commenced, the cast attended six weeks of ape school, spearheaded by movement coach Alain Gauthier. Teague also spent some time observing chimpanzees. 

“I learned how much like an ape I am. I might be more ape than human,” Teague said. “One of the most fascinating things to me was how political they are, and how complicated their social hierarchy is; it's not entirely vertical, there's this kind of intermingling. Two apes will form a coalition and try to take down another, and the one who's in power will go and campaign. There's all these strategies they use to get where they want to be socially. And I had no idea that they could lie or deceive or backstab the way they do. It makes a lot of sense that we come from them.” 

“Witcher” star Allan — who plays the only significant human role in the film — says her time on the sets of the fantasy Netflix show helped with some of the stunts for this movie. 

“I have gained confidence from doing so much on ‘Witcher.’ And I've done dance in the past. I enjoy doing that physical stuff. I find it really exhilarating to do a stunt well. But there was stuff I did in this film that I haven't done in other things. There was some water stuff that was really fun to do. And just a lot of falling over. I was always bruised,” she said.

A film set centuries after the fall of human civilization is familiar territory for Ball, who directed all the “Maze Runner” films. 

“I just kind of fall into these worlds for whatever reason,” he said. “But I didn’t come up with the world for ‘Maze Runner,’ it was in the books. I just had to implement and execute it. But that’s a world you don't want to go into: It's dirty. It's dangerous. Whereas this ‘Apes’ world… it's beautiful. It's nature reclaiming the Earth and it's becoming a new Eden in a way. I hope people don't use the word dystopian for this movie. I hope they use words like, ‘a lost world.’ 

“So much time has passed that all signs of humanity have almost been wiped away. I love the idea that it becomes a lovely world that you would like to explore,” he continued. “And the cool thing about it is, underneath all that beauty and tranquility, there's this haunting idea of the mistakes that mankind made.”

When Maryam Jillani was growing up in Islamabad, the last day of Ramadan was about more than breaking a month-long fast with extended family.
A joyous occasion, the Eid Al-Fitr holiday also was marked with visits to the market to get new bangles, wearing her best new clothes and getting hennaed. Not to mention the little envelopes with cash gifts from the adults.
“But, of course, food,” said Jillani, a food writer and author of the new cookbook “Pakistan.” “Food is a big part of Eid.”
At the center of her grandmother Kulsoom’s table was always mutton pulao, a delicately spiced rice dish in which the broth that results from cooking bone-in meat is then used to cook the rice. Her uncle would make mutton karahi, diced meat simmered in tomato sauce spiked with ginger and chilies.
Cutlets, kebabs, lentil fritters and more rounded out the meal, while dollops of pungent garlic chutney and a cooling chutney with cilantro and mint cut through all the meat. For dessert were bowls of chopped fruit and seviyan, or semolina vermicelli noodles that are fried then simmered in cardamom-spiced milk.
The vegetable sides were the one thing that changed. Since Ramadan follows the lunar Islamic calendar, it can fall any time of year.
These dishes, and many of the associated memories, make it into Jillani’s book, but she would be the first to acknowledge they represent just a sliver of the nation’s varied cuisine.
Her father, who worked in international development, used to take the family to different parts of the country. Later, she did her own development fieldwork in education across rural Pakistan.
Along the way, she found striking differences between the tangier, punchier flavors in the east, toward India and China, and the milder but still flavorful cuisine in the west, toward Afghanistan.
“I knew our cuisine was a lot more than what we were finding on the Internet,” she said.
After moving to Washington, D.C. as a graduate student, she started the blog Pakistan Eats in 2008 to highlight dishes that were lesser known to Western cooks. Research on the book began 15 years later, and she visited 40 kitchens in homes across Pakistan.
“Even though I hadn’t lived in Pakistan for over 10 years, each kitchen felt like home,” she writes in the book’s introduction.
She includes what she calls “superstars” of the cuisine, such as chicken karahi, one of the first dishes Pakistanis learn to make when overseas to get a taste of home. The meat is seared in a karahi (skillet) and then braised in a tomato sauce spiced with cumin, coriander, ginger, garlic and chilies before a dollop of yogurt is stirred into the pot.
Other recipes reflect the diverse nature of Pakistan’s migrant communities, such as kabuli pulao, an Afghan rice dish made with beef, garam masala, chilies, sweetened carrots and raisins.
“The idea behind the cookbook is to try to play my small part in carving out a space for Pakistani food on the global culinary table,” she said.
And of course, honoring her grandmother’s mutton pulao.
Jillani is hosting Eid this year at her home, now in Manila, Philippines, and she plans to make it, as well as an Afghan-style eggplant, shami kebabs, and the cilantro and mint chutney.
“If I’m feeling especially ambitious that day, I might make a second mutton dish,” she said. “I’ve been a bit homesick.”

PARIS: French star actor Gerard Depardieu, on trial for sexual assault, told the Paris court Tuesday that he was not in the habit of “groping” women, and called the #MeToo movement a “reign of terror.”
“I don’t see why I would go around groping a woman,” he said in his first statement at the trial, in which he is charged with sexual assault on two women during the shooting of a film in 2021.
Depardieu said he was “not like that” in response to the accusations, adding that “there are vices that are alien to me.”
Depardieu, 76, who has acted in more than 200 films and television series, has been accused of improper behavior by around 20 women but this is the first case to come to trial.
“I deny all of it,” he told the court Tuesday.
He is the highest-profile figure to face accusations in French cinema’s response to the #MeToo movement, which he told the court Tuesday “will become a reign of terror.”
The trial relates to charges of sexual assault during the filming in 2021 of “Les Volets Verts” (“The Green Shutters“) by director Jean Becker.
Anouk Grinberg, a prominent actor who appeared in the film, has backed the two plaintiffs — a set dresser, 54, identified only as Amelie, and a 34-year-old assistant director. Both women allege sexual violence.
Giving his account of events during the shoot, Depardieu told the court that “it was a Friday, it was hot, it was humid. I weigh 150 kilos (331 pounds) and I was in a bad mood.”
He said that after a heated discussion with Amelie about choices on set, he grabbed her by the hips but only “so I wouldn’t slip.”
Amelie, testifying after Depardieu, said that Depardieu had actually behaved like a “wild animal” and “wasn’t at all the same man that you see here today.”
He was “constantly making remarks about women,” including on their attire, she said.
She reiterated her account, first reported in February last year, on how she had suffered sexual assault, harassment and sexist insults during the filming in September 2021.
She said Depardieu made “obscene remarks.”
Asked why she had not come forward immediately, Amelie said: “I didn’t want to talk about it, I felt humiliated. I was having a great run professionally and I knew that if I filed a police report, it would be the end of the film.”
Grinberg said previously that Depardieu constantly made “salacious remarks” during shooting, and told AFP that producers who hired him knew they were “hiring an abuser.”
But Depardieu challenged the accusation relating to the use of dirty language.
The trial, initially scheduled for October 2024, had been postponed due to the actor’s ill health.
His lawyer said back then that Depardieu had undergone a heart bypass operation and suffered from diabetes that was aggravated by the stress of the forthcoming trial.
Depardieu became a star in France from the 1980s with roles in “The Last Metro,” “Police” and “Cyrano de Bergerac,” before Peter Weir’s “Green Card” also made him a Hollywood celebrity.
He later acted in global productions including Kenneth Branagh’s “Hamlet,” Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi” and Netflix’s “Marseille” series.

RIYADH: During the holy month of Ramadan, about 2 billion Muslims around the world test the limits of their physical and mental strength. But while most are aware of the religious benefits of fasting from dawn to dusk throughout the month, the effects on the body and mind might be less well understood.

Fasting is defined as a physiological state in which a person abstains from consuming calories for a specific period of time, leading to changes in metabolism and bodily functions. Types of fasting vary, including therapeutic fasting, intermittent fasting and religious fasting, each with its own distinct physiological effects.

Mohammed Mahroos, a consultant and clinical research scientist at the King Fahad Specialist Hospital Research Center, explained what happens to the body when a person fasts for 30 days.

“Fasting provides a rest period for the digestive system, allowing the body to focus on cell repair and detoxification,” he told Arab News.

It results in lower insulin and glucose levels, which promote the burning rather than storage of fat. When glycogen, the stored form of glucose, is depleted the body relies on fat as its primary source of energy, a process called ketosis.

From a medical perspective, fasting is used in some cases to treat obesity, insulin resistance and metabolic disorders.

A study published by the New England Journal of Medicine in 2019 concluded that intermittent fasting boosts the metabolism and reduces insulin resistance, making it an effective was to prevent type 2 diabetes.

“When a balanced diet follows, fasting enhances metabolic efficiency,” Mahroos said. “Its benefits are only realized if the diet is controlled … after the fasting period.”

Consumption of unhealthy foods when breaking the fast, such as processed sugars, hydrogenated fats and fast food, can reduce the benefits and lead to health problems, he added.

Fasting also enhances autophagy, a cellular process that contributes to cell regeneration and the development of a healthier immune system, as demonstrated by the research of Japanese biologist Yoshinori Ohsumi, winner of the 2016 Nobel Price in Physiology or Medicine.

Islamic religious fasting, during which a person abstains from all food or drink from sunrise to sunset, is characterized by its spiritual and psychological depth, Mahroos said.

The practice “promotes self-discipline and strengthens willpower … it contributes to increased mental clarity, it addition to its health benefits.”

But how does the response of the body differ when fasting for 30 consecutive days compared with short-term fasts?

During a single day of fasting, Mahroos said, the body begins to use stored glycogen for energy. Insulin levels decrease, facilitating fat burning, and the secretion of growth hormones increases, which contributes to tissue repair and improved metabolism. Changes in blood sugar levels might result in feelings of fatigue and hunger.

A study published by the Journal of Neuroscience in 2021 found that short-term fasting induces the production of a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which can improve cognitive strength and reduce the risk of diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Intermittent fasting reduces harmful cholesterol levels and improves blood pressure, reducing the risk of heart disease, Mahroos added.

When a person fasts for 30 days, however, “the body enters a long-term adaptation phase, enhancing metabolic efficiency,” Mahroos said.

Insulin sensitivity improves, reducing the risk of diabetes. Chronic inflammation levels decrease, contributing to improved heart and immune-system health. And autophagy is stimulated, helping to eliminate damaged cells and improve tissue health.

According to a study published by the journal Cell Stem Cell in 2014, fasting can play a major role in supporting the immune system, as it enhances the production of white blood cells and increases the body’s resistance to disease.

Gradual weight loss can also occur if a balanced diet is followed after breaking the fast at iftar.

As for the mental and spiritual aspects of fasting, there is a range of potential benefits. Psychologically, it can help develop an improved ability to control habits and behaviors, reduce stress and anxiety as a result of reduced secretion of the “stress hormone” cortisol, and provide a sense of accomplishment and self-control.

Spiritually, fasting supports a process of self-reflection and mental clarity, promotes a sense of gratitude and appreciation, strengthens patience, and offers an opportunity to reevaluate and improve personal habits.

But fasting can be harmful in certain situations. When the body is not replenished with essential fluids and nutrients, it can lead to dehydration and vitamin deficiency, Mahroos said. Overeating and consumption of unhealthy foods when breaking the fast can result in weight gain and metabolic disorders, he added.

“Fasting is a complex physiological process that positively impacts physical, psychological and spiritual health,” he said.

“However, achieving its benefits depends on following a healthy diet after fasting. Poor eating habits may reverse these benefits or cause unwanted side effects.”

In addition, people with chronic conditions, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, should consult a doctor before fasting, Mahroos advised.

DUBAI: Sotheby’s is set to showcase a collection of Islamic arms and armor, representing more than 500 years of history and spanning more than 100 lots in April in London, Dubai and at the biannual Arts of the Islamic World & India. 

The collection presents the artistic traditions of numerous Islamic dynasties, from Spain to Indonesia, and is the result of over 50 years of study and acquisition by scholar-collector Philippe Gilles René Missillier (1949-2022).

The auction will take place on April 29 at Sotheby’s London, followed by the biannual Arts of the Islamic World & India sale on April 30.

Prior to the auctions, highlights from the collection will be exhibited at Sotheby’s Dubai gallery in Dubai International Financial Center from April 7-11. 

The collection highlights the technological evolution of weaponry, tracing developments from the equestrian age of chivalry through the gunpowder revolution and into the modern era. 

The items showcase skilled craftsmanship, featuring vegetal and geometric patterns combined with calligraphy. Similar motifs appear across different weapons, highlighting the connections between Islamic art across time and place.

Notable items include rare Mamluk and Aqqoyunlu pieces, as well as examples from the Safavid, Ottoman and Mughal empires. Highlights include artifacts from the Siege of Vienna’s Turkenbeute and the personal swords of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and French army officer Claude Martin.

Missillier, who assembled the collection over half a century, immersed himself in his field, visiting museums, attending auctions and studying reference works. 

His collection was exhibited in Paris in 1988 as part of Splendour des Armes Orientales, the largest exhibition of its kind in the 20th and 21st centuries. 

This upcoming sale marks the first public viewing of the collection since that exhibition.
