DUBAI: Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism announced the launch of the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp, which recognizes hotels that adhere to the highest standards of sustainability.

The initiative, launched in line with the UAE Year of Sustainability, is part of DET’s commitment to boosting Dubai’s position as a leading sustainable tourism destination, Emirates News Agency reported.

The certification will validate hotels’ commitment to sustainability.

Hotels must meet the highest standards of DET’s 19 sustainability requirements to obtain the stamp. The criteria includes energy and water efficiency, waste management programs, as well as staff education and engagement initiatives.

The stamp will feature a three-tier scheme with gold, silver and bronze categories. Hotel nominations will run from Aug. 3-31.

“By recognizing these exemplary establishments, we are encouraging others to follow suit and embrace sustainable initiatives that not only benefit their businesses but also contribute to the collective well-being of our city and the world at large,” Yousuf Lootah, CEO of the corporate strategy and performance sector at Dubai’s DET, said.

Lootah added: “Supported by Dubai’s vibrant hotel industry, this initiative is a strategic step towards achieving our goal of making Dubai a leading destination for global travelers seeking the ultimate sustainability experience.

“By supporting businesses and encouraging them to adopt eco-friendly practices and reduce their carbon footprint, we are not only safeguarding the environment, but also promoting sustainable growth.

“As Dubai prepares to host COP28 from Nov. 30-Dec. 12 this year, the launch of the Dubai Sustainable Tourism Stamp also demonstrates the tourism industry’s foresight and determination to foster an eco-friendly sector that is both economically prosperous and environmentally responsible.”

DET’s sustainability strategy has paved the way for schemes such as the Carbon Calculator, which assists stakeholders and partners in identifying cost-saving sustainability opportunities, and Dubai Can, which encourages the use of reusable bottles.
