ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said on Monday the country's southern port city of Karachi was likely to witness another spell of heavy monsoon rains that could flood some of its neighborhoods later today.

The PMD issued the weather advisory only a day after seven people lost their lives due to torrential rainfall in the city.

According to a report published in Dawn newspaper, these people included a woman and her infant son who drowned after falling into an open drain.

Four other people were electrocuted while one man died after being hit by lightning on the outskirts of the city.

"Heavy rains may generate urban flooding in Karachi," the PMD said in its forecast on Monday.

It also warned of flash floods in places like Khuzdar and Kalat.

"The Depression over Northeast Arabian Sea further moved nearly westward during last 12 hours, weakened this morning into a well-marked low-pressure area (WML) and now lies over central parts of North Arabian Sea, southwest of Karachi," it added. "The system is likely to weaken further into a low-pressure area & move westward (towards Oman coast)."

The PMD also warned of scattered rain showers in Sindh and Balochistan, adding that isolated thundershowers were likely in northeast Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir and adjoining hilly areas.
