DUBAI: The UAE has given a 1-month grace period for expired visit visa holders who were initially told to leave the country by Aug. 10, national daily Gulf News reported.

The Federal Authority of Identity and Citizenship said the extension applies to visit visas that expired after March 1.

The extension gives expired visit visa holders the chance to leave the country without paying fines. Overstaying in the country costs $54 on the first day, and $27 for each following day.

The country earlier announced it was giving expired visit visa holders until the end of the year to sort their documents due to the pandemic, but later cancelled the extension.

For those whose visas expired before March 1, authorities previously said they would have to leave the country by Aug. 18.
