Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan praised on Tuesday Ethiopia's and Eritrea's efforts to reconsulate relations between the two nations.

The UAE held a tripartite summit with the Eritrea and Ethiopia held in Abu Dhabi where the crown prince awarded the Zayed Medal to the Eritrean president and the Ethiopian prime minister in recognition of their efforts to launch the peace process between the two countries.

Ethiopia’s reformist new Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed broke the ice last month by fully embracing a peace deal that ended a 1998-2000 border war that killed tens of thousands and left families separated. A series of diplomatic breakthroughs quickly followed as one of Africa’s longest-running conflicts neared an end.

Some excited Ethiopians have compared the restoration of relations with one of the world’s most closed-off countries to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
