CAIRO: Well-known Islamic preacher Amr Khaled fell prey to mockery on social media after appearing in a poultry company’s advert, by linking spirituality to eating from the brand.
Khaled begins by highlighting the importance of worship during Ramadan and how healthy eating helps Muslims who are observing the month.
The Egyptian preacher appeared in the video along with chef Ascia Othman, whom he introduced as “a developer for health meals,” set to prepare dishes using a specific brand of chicken.
He asks the chef why she is using this particular brand, to which she answers by listing its health benefits.
The preacher then concludes by giving a spiritual advice on how “in Ramadan, fasting does not only mean the stomach is abstaining from eating, but indeed every part of the body is observing fast.”
“Your eyes, tongue and ears are abstaining from what is prohibited.”
He then recommends recipes to be prepared by the chef during the month “as good for spirituality.”
“The soul will not increase in spirituality, unless your body and stomach are in good shape. And by trying Asica’s recipes, you will experience, in God’s will, an increase in spirituality as you perform night prayers and Taraweeh.”
Social media users hurled negative comments at the preacher on using religion to promote a chicken brand.
Many were also critical of Khaled’s religious language and how his linking between a chicken product and worship was illogical.
