A Saudi citizen caught in a practical joke on social media websites has appealed to members of the press to clarify the incident.
Dawi Fahad Al-Harbi bought a spare part for his car for SR 1,300, which he paid for by check. A friend then added four more digits to the figure on the photocopied check using a Photoshop program and wrote “toward the value of a goat,” which he then published on social media websites.
Members of Al-Harbi’s clan were angry with him and didn’t believe him when he refuted the incident. Al-Harbi has called on the press to help him in clearing up the misunderstanding.
He said elder members of the tribe were most upset and that it was very difficult to persuade them that it was a joke. However, those who know of his economic situation were not fooled by the joke.
“I was really upset by the anger expressed on Twitter, and I still remember one statement, which read: “He should have given that money to the poor in his village or bought an orphanage instead of wasting it on a goat.” These people don’t know that I don’t even own a house; I live in a three-bedroom rented apartment,” he added.
Al-Harbi is currently studying for a master’s degree in business administration at King Abdulaziz University.
