TORONTO: Edwin Encarnacion was a triple shy of the cycle and drove in four runs and the Toronto Blue Jays convincingly completed a three-game sweep of the Baltimore Orioles with a 13-5 victory, matching a franchise record with their 11th straight win.
Encarnacion hit a two-run homer, Colby Rasmus hit a solo shot, and Jose Bautista drove in three runs for the Blue Jays, who equaled a franchise-best winning streak set in 1987 and tied in 1998. Josh Johnson (1-2) earned his first win as a Blue Jay in his eighth start of the season, allowing four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts over six- plus frames. Freddy Garcia (3-5) struggled through just 2 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits and two walks in the setback. Ryan Flaherty hit two homers and drove in three runs for the Orioles, who have dropped four of six.
Minnesota 5 Cleveland 3: In Cleveland, Oswaldo Arcia and Josh Willingham each knocked in two runs and the Minnesota Twins held off the Cleveland Indians, 5-3, to avoid a three-game series sweep. Trevor Plouffe had one RBI for the Twins, who had 12 hits. Pedro Hernandez (3-1) got the start for Minnesota due to Mike Pelfrey being placed on the 15-day disabled list prior to the game.
Detroit 7 Boston 5: In Detroit, the Detroit Tigers took advantage of Boston's errors in the eighth inning to beat the Red Sox, 7-5, and win the four-game series at Comerica Park. Avisail Garcia hit a routine fly ball in the eighth to right fielder Daniel Nava, who appeared to make the catch but failed to transfer the ball to his throwing hand. Bryan Holaday dropped down a sacrifice bunt and Boston reliever Andrew Miller's (0-2) throw pulled Mike Napoli off first.
Tampa Bay 3 New York 1: In the Bronx, James Loney's tie-breaking, two-run single with two outs in the top of the seventh inning lifted the Tampa Bay Rays to a 3-1 victory over the New York Yankees and a split of a four-game series between the AL East foes.
Loney finished 3-for-4 on the afternoon, while Ben Zobrist contributed an RBI single and Chris Archer turned in six sharp innings to help the Rays bounce back from two straight losses after taking Thursday's opener. Archer (2-3) did his part by limiting the Yankees to a run on six hits with one walk to earn his third career major league win and first in five road starts.
Kansas City 7 Chicago 6: In Kansas City, the Kansas City Royals used a three-run, two-out rally in the eighth inning to beat the Chicago White Sox, 7-6, and salvage the finale of a three-game set at Kauffman Stadium. Mike Moustakas and David Lough each opened the inning with singles off Jesse Crain (2-2), who had a scoreless streak of 29 straight appearances snapped. Elliot Johnson's sacrifice bunt loaded the bases due to a Crain error, and after the reliever fanned the next two batters, Alex Gordon drew a walk to score Moustakas
Seattle 6 Oakland 3 : In Seattle, Kendrys Morales' pinch-hit three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning propelled the Seattle Mariners past the Oakland Athletics, 6-3, Sunday in the conclusion of a three-game series at Safeco Field. Oakland reliever Grant Balfour (0-1) looked to retire his second straight batter to start the 10th after Mike Zunino struck out swinging. The ball, though, escaped the grasp of his catcher and scurried away, allowing Zunino to reach safely on a wild pitch. Michael Saunders followed with a single to move Zunino to third before Morales, pinch-hitting for Brendan Ryan, launched a shot into the right-center bleachers.
Chicago Cubs 14 Houston 6: In Chicago, Ryan Sweeney hit a three-run homer and knocked in six runs as the Chicago Cubs dominated the Houston Astros, 14-6, in the rubber match of a three-game series. Anthony Rizzo went 3-for-3 with a two-run homer, four RBI and four runs scored for the Cubs, who had 16 hits. Nate Schierholtz went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in and two scored.
Pittsburgh 10 LA Angels of Anaheim 9, 10 innings: In Anaheim, Travis Snider's tie-breaking single highlighted a four-run 10th inning and a furious late comeback that gave the Pittsburgh Pirates a wild 10-9 victory over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and a three-game series sweep. The Pirates trailed 6-3 entering their final at-bat, but struck for three runs against Angels closer Ernesto Frieri in the top of the ninth before battering the Anaheim bullpen again in the 10th en route to the franchise's first-ever sweep of an interleague set on the road.
