Gaza has long been a central flashpoint in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This small coastal strip is home to approximately 2.3 million Palestinians within an area that does not exceed 365 sq. km. It has suffered from isolation and armed conflicts since Hamas took control in 2007.

On a scorching morning in early June, the border triangle where Sudan, Egypt and Libya meet appeared calm as usual. Yet, beneath that stillness, the embers of a hidden conflict were about to ignite.

Since the signing of the Camp David Accords in 1978, peace between Egypt and Israel has resembled more of a strategic ceasefire than a warm partnership. However, the ongoing war in Gaza has exposed real fractures that are now pressing against the foundations of this long-standing peace.
