This week US President Barack Obama is scheduled to host leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The meeting is taking place at a time of increasing distrust and on the heels of a GCC summit, which stressed the need for unity among the GCC countries in the face of various regional security threats.
This time around, the GCC leaders will leave for Washington much more united than ever before. The Arab leaders’ moods indicate that they are leaving for the US to make it clear to Washington to take clear positions on various issues concerning the region including the controversial agreement with Iran over its nuclear program and US’ intentions of lifting sanctions on Iran.
The main source of Gulf countries’ concern is that the United States has been negotiating with Tehran without pressuring it to stop its interference in Iraq, Syria and Yemen. The relations between Washington and Gulf Arab capitals are not at their best due to the ambiguous American stance over various regional issues particularly in the ongoing crisis Syria and its refusal to declare a no-fly zone in northern Syria to prevent the killer Assad regime from exterminating the Syrian people fighting for freedom from this totalitarian and sectarian regime that has been ruling this Arab country for more than 40 years.
The meeting at Camp David is of importance, as it saw the signing of a peace agreement between Egypt and Israel decades ago but has brought no peace to the Middle East because of the policies of Tel Aviv and its refusal to give back Palestinian territories.
According to media reports, the US administration seeks to sign deals for American arms and to build a missile system in the Gulf region. But Washington has declared that it would not sell these countries F-35 warplanes because only its ally, Israel, is entitled to get these aircraft to ensure the superiority of the Zionist entity in the Middle East. Nevertheless, the GCC has conveyed a clear message to the American administration by inviting French President Francois Hollande to attend the last GCC summit. They wanted to let Washington know that these nations have other alternatives for the procurement of arms.
What distinguishes the upcoming visit of the Gulf Cooperation Council’s leaders this time is the ever-growing leading role of the Kingdom since Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman’s ascension to the throne..
Our leadership has given the Arab citizens a sense of pride and dignity, and it has demonstrated its seriousness in uprooting the dangers that threaten security and stability of the Gulf region. It is determined to play a central role even if this would anger allies and enemies. The world has now realized that King Salman means what he says and that it would be dangerous to tamper with Saudi Arabia, and the US administration and all conspirators must understand that the Saudi sword has come out of its sheath to uproot the Iranian-backed militias, and will not return to it before achieving victory.
