Learning a new language can be fun but also introduces you to a new world, with its exotic culture and interesting way of life. Whether you are serious about learning a certain new language because you need it for your work or read that BBC article that says learning a new language improves your memory and makes you smarter; here are two mobile apps that can help you with that:
Lingua.ly
Learn new vocabs from the following languages without ever reading a text book: Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German or Hebrew.
Start by selecting only 3 words, practice and read short articles in which those words were mentioned. It is a fantastic way to learn gradually and accumulatively as you can add new vocabs to practice and use by tapping on any cool word you spot. Lingua.ly will instantly split the article’s view in two to display English translation and audio pronunciation of that word. It will also add the new word you just tapped to your Vocab tab so that you can learn more about it and read articles mentioning it anytime you want.
The articles Lingua.ly provides are versatile as they are categories to suit every learnner. You can choose whether you want to read articles as a beginner or in your chosen field of interest in addition or the recent headlines that include your newly learned vocabs.
After reading articles, you can start practicing your vocabulary sets. What I really appreciate about this app is that it acts smart by adapting to your learning needs. In other words, It learns from you about what you really need to learn.
Lingua.ly is available for iOs and Android. You can also scavenge for new words while on the Web by using the Chrome extension.
Duolingo
Another awesome app I read about last week and had to try it out. Learn with other million users a language or more from Duolingo’s courses in Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Irish or Danish. You can also use Duolingo on the Web and sign up to be notified when a new course (for a new language) is added. Duolingo is counting the number of people interested in learning other languages too and it seems that the more people sign up for a new language, the quicker Duolingo will add it. Meanwhile, you can use Duolingo in your language to learn the above listed international languages.
After deciding on the language you want to learn, you will also set a daily goal for learning and practicing the language based on how serious you are to determine the length of your lessons. I want to learn French, and I have set my level to beginner. Duolingo is very organized; you have to go through stages based on your level and seriousness. Every stage has listening, speaking and translating parts where you get to listen to how each new word or phrase is said, repeat the new words or phrases and translate from-to your native language and the new one which you intend to learn.
Duolingo is available for iOs, Android and Windows Phone. You can also log in to your profile and use the web version any time you want.
Download Lingua.ly and Duolingo and let us know if they could help you learn a foreign language.
