RIYADH: The High Commission for Development of Riyadh (HCRD), in cooperation with the Department of Traffic, partially opened this week the newly constructed tunnel along Salahuddin Road at the intersection of Makkah Road.
According to a source from HCRD, it is one of the mega-projects being implemented that coincides with multibillion-riyal public transport projects, including the Riyadh Metro.
He said the southbound traffic lane in the tunnel had been opened for motorists in conjunction with the beginning of the school year. This will facilitate traffic movement in the center of the city and ease traffic congestion. It forms part of the Green Line of the Riyadh Metro project within the King Abdul Aziz Project for Public Transport.
Work is also in progress to complete the remaining project, including the implementation of services, sidewalks, lighting, pedestrian walkways and parking areas.
The work extends for some 1,500 meters and includes the construction of an 800-meter-long subway. It consists of three tracks from the main road and through service of three tracks, with four at the confluence leading to Makkah Road. It is linked with tunnel traffic management systems based along Abu Bakr and Al-Urouba at Riyadh Air Base.
