JEDDAH: University of Science and Technology in Sanaa has refused to issue transfer certificates to 55 Saudi students who were forced to leave studies as war broke out in Yemen.

The university is demanding $3500 as tuition fees for the second semester, even as the Saudi students did not complete their semester. The university has instructed all these students to return to Sanaa and complete their practicals, some students were quoted as saying by local media on Monday.
“I was studying at the university in Sanaa, but I had to leave the country after Houthi rebels captured Sanaa. I have postponed my studies in the university until the security situation becomes normal,” Saeed Ramadan, an Eritrean student, told Arab News.
“Two years are left for graduation and I cannot stay for this period in Yemen because of tough security measures and economic situation, in addition to war,” he said.
A Saudi student, Mohammed Abdullah Al-Dashel, was quoted by local media as saying that refusal by the university to issue transfer certificates jeopardizes our graduation plans. “The university move is frustrating. It is telling us to come back to Sanaa for practicals in hospitals over there, despite the dangerous situation in that country. Our parents want us to complete the practical program in Saudi hospitals,” he said.
Sakhar Manea, another Saudi student, said: “I fail to understan how the university can ask us to pay the tuition fees for the full semester. We could study only for a month and then were forced to return to the Kingdom due to the war in Yemen.”
