JEDDAH: The laboratory of Al-Amal Complex for Mental Health was recently ranked fifth in the RIQAS program for biochemistry out of 120 laboratories. It also came in sixth in the same program for the department of hematology among the 60 participants, local media reported.
Dr. Nasser bin Faleh Al-Dossari, assistant general director of health affairs for treatment services in Riyadh, praised the achievements made by Al-Amal Complex for its lead ranking over other centers across the Kingdom.
Al-Dossari thanked the staff of the laboratory for their diligence and providing the best laboratory services.
The lab department at Al Amal Complex is regarded as one of the important, vital and effective departments in the complex because of its leading services in the field of medical tests to help physicians in the diagnoses of illnesses.
The lab has the most advanced equipment in the area of medical laboratories. It consists of several units, including the clinical toxicology screening unit which is regarded as one of the most important units to detect narcotic substances in the urine of addicts. The unit also conducts blood tests to detect the level of therapeutic drugs to ensure the effectiveness of a given dose.
The other departments include the biochemistry unit to conduct analysis of body fluids using chemical reactions to help doctors with vital processes and the pathological changes in the patient’s body.
The hematology unit is another important unit in the department which conducts test to uncover bacteria and parasites. The blood samples taken of the patient’s body are sent to the department to detect any viral diseases such as HIV and hepatitis. The other tests conducted by the department involve the C-reactive protein (CRP) test, Anti-streptolysin O (ASO) and VDRL tests for screening syphilis.
The hormones unit involves sending blood samples of psychiatric patients to make sure of the effectiveness of the psychiatric medications and to follow up on hormone levels.
