Jubail Petrochemical Company (Kemya), a manufacturing affiliate of the Saudi Basic Industries Corp. (SABIC), has won the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu Environmental Performance Award for 2011.
The annual award was presented at a ceremony organized by the Royal Commission in Jubail recently. Besides the environment performance awards, the environmental awareness program awards for schools were also presented. A seminar on environment was held under the theme, "Green Economy."
The ceremony was attended by Mosaed A. Al-Mesa'ar, acting CEO, Royal Commission, as well as a group of business leaders, factory managers and senior executives and managers associated with the industrial sector.
The award recognizes a company's distinctive performance in the field of safety, health and environment. The criteria for the awards require work completion without lost time injury to employees or contractors, and improvement in work performance and objectives by meeting environmental standards.
After receiving the honorary plaque, Kemya President Abdul Aziz Al-Habardi commended the role played by the Royal Commission in Jubail and Yanbu to create awareness on environment care and to encourage companies to reach up to international standards in environment preservation. He highlighted the successful achievements realized by SABIC's various affiliates in environment care, responsible care and sustainability.
Al-Habardi appreciated the efforts exerted by the company's employees and contractors and their effective contributions toward these achievements. "The award has been the result of our collective efforts, and strict implementation of the effective policies in the field of safety and management systems. Kemya has won the award more than once. It is proud of its programs for environment preservation, occupational safety, corporate social responsibility, responsible care and sustainability. These programs represent a fundamental value to SABIC and its senior management and is a high priority for the company to achieve its social responsibility and sustainability goals," he said.
In his opening remarks at the ceremony, Hussein bin Mohammed Al-Bashari, manager, Environment Protection and Control, Royal Commission, said that the concept of a green economy hinges on an eco-friendly economic approach that seeks to achieve sustainable development. He said a record number of investments in green energy was seen in 2010.
Al-Bashari highlighted the Royal Commission's resolve to formulate effective environmental laws and regulations to ensure the rights of the people to live in a clean environment, and bring about sustainable development for the benefit of future generations.
A seminar held as part of the program focused on green economy and its relevant industrial applications, waste reduction and recycling, and air and water quality.
