Nunungan exacts revenge on Carrier Juffali

Nunungan Lanao Lakers got the revenge they wanted so badly on first round tormentor Carrier Juffali with a big help from James Smith 107-66 in a mind-boggling result of an Inter-Commercial Open Rated Division game last Thursday in the 1st Friendi Basketball Tournament presented by all new WPBL at the Ahmed Khaki Sports Complex (Orca) court here.
Nunungan brought in Smith to begin its campaign for the second round in the centerpiece division and the Fil-Am cager responded in a big way scoring a night-high 34 points to lead a massive show of firepower that dropped previously unbeaten Carrier to 3-1 in the team standings in a tie with the Lakers.
Nunungan sat on a 57-30 lead at halftime. It then poured 29 points in the third quarter compared to a measly 17 by Carrier whose A-game that brought the Airconmakers to three straight victories deserted them in this match.
Christian Guimpatan, George Pascual, JR Piedra and Yoyong Akmad joined Best Player Smith during a killer third quarter run.
Guimpatan spiked his game with two uncontested dunks to the delight of the crowd, and the first staked Nunungan to 38-point lead, 76-38, with 3:39 left in the period.
While Nunungan could not seem to do anything wrong Carrier had a bad night and looked demoralized after the enemy’s lead grew even bigger at crunch time.
Capping WPBL’s eighth week on Friday was another Open Rated game that went to overtime with Shadow Lounge winning by 98-86 over Thunderous Marogong.
Roby David of Shadow Lounge converted both free throws to force overtime 84-all.
During the five-minute extra period Shadow Lounge, now under veteran coach Boy Corsega, shut down the enemy offense with a paralyzing defense to the point Marogong was limited to a single basket.
The victory improved Shadow Lounge’s record to 2-2, while Marogong absorbed its fourth straight loss. Ron Magat with 30 points was named Best Player of the game.
After its 96-87 upset of Shadow Lounge the previous week the shoe was on the other foot for Marogong when it finished at the short end of a 99-93 decision with Computer Diagnostics in the Open Non-Rated A game Thursday.
Moulinex, getting 22 points from Diego Domalogdog, continued to lead the division at 3-1 after beating Unidecor Dynamics 114-74.
Greenland, meantime, tied idle Nesma Holdings at 3-0 in Open Non-Rated C by winning against Shakba Makkah-Taif 91-81 in the third game Friday.
In the 10th KFAFH Inter-Department organized by United Filipino Workers of King Fahad Armed Forces Hospital (UFWORK), Engineering overwhelmed BME 63-38 and HRD owned AATC 70-52 in games Thursday while Housekeeping whipped Dietary 102-79 and Portering defeated Housekeeping 77-65 in the Friday twinbill.
