RIYADH: The Saudi capital is currently experiencing the smooth flow of traffic due to the deployment of a state-of- the-art advanced traffic control system at 75 intersec- tions.
The American TransSuite system for traffic manage- ment is being implemented by the Higher Commission for the Development of Riyadh and the Riyadh Traffic Department.
“By the end of the year, it’s expected that more than 100 devices under the system will have been installed in the Saudi capital,” a source said.
Explaining the effectiveness of the system he said, “If you maintain your speed while traveling on a certain road during a certain time of the day, you won’t encoun- ter any red light.”
He added: “The system is traffic adoptive; it adjusts to the existing traffic situation to maximize traffic flow at intersections.”
The source added that the contract includes the deploy- ment of the system for three years, and maintenance and operations for another five years.
The system involves the installation of 350 devices to control major intersections, and uses 1,400 digital cam- eras for counting vehicle numbers.
It also involves 175 cameras to read number plates, and a range of technical equipment managed by a spe- cialized work team.
The system connects various control devices within the traffic lights to achieve the smooth flow of traffic.
Among other functions, the system monitors speeding vehicles and those that run red lights, while also alerting authorities of other abnormalities such as fires or acci- dents.
The system conforms to global standards for smart transport telecommunications by connecting and talking with control devices inside other traffic lights.
Following a range of studies conducted in the Kingdom, the authorities decided to implement the TransSuite sys- tem due to its modern format, as well as the fact that it has obtained multiple global awards in the field of traffic management.
