JEDDAH: The experimental Friday morning league by the Industrial Sports Association dubbed MODON-ISA 1st Friday Morning Club Basketball Tournament turned out a big success with guest team Jeddah Lions bagging the championship in style.
Last Friday at the MODON Industrial Plaza basketball court on the outskirts of Jeddah, Jeddah Lions of Erwin Carpena brought down Wasalak PCMC Team in Game 2 of the best-of-three championship series to complete a 9-game title sweep in the tournament. The Lions finished the eliminations undefeated on 6-0, beat Jamjoom in the semifinals and Wasalak in the finals.
The victory Friday ended a championship drought for Carpena, who last had a champion team in 2010 while notching a string of runner-up finishes after that.
The awarding ceremony took place after the final match. Carpena and his team received the champion trophy and gold medals. Wasalak of Teddy Soriano settled for the first runner-up while Jamjoom Pharma and Seico Legrand were 2nd runer-up and 3rd runner-up respectively.
Game 2 of the title series was a walk in the park for Jeddah Lions as they controlled the game from the get-go to win by 72-57.
Named tournament MVP was Yiannis Reyes of Jeddah Lions. With Reyes in the mythical five selection were Tondo (Jeddah Lions) and Tayras ( Wasalak) Best Guards; Morales (Wasalak) and Taguiam (Jeddah Lions) Best Forwards and Rod Eusebio (Jeddah Lions) Best Center.
Other awards handed out during the tournament finale were: Sportsmanship Awards Allosada (Jeddah Lions), Soriano (Wasalak), Lorenzo (Jamjoom Pharma) and Giganto (Seico Legrand), Best Coach Carpena and Best Team Manager Duds Ballinan.
ISA President Eric Abrantes congratulated the winners and the other teams for their great support and participation in the 1st Friday Morning Club Tournament by MODON-ISA.
