RIYADH: Saudi Arabia registered a 5.5 percent increase in the consumption of bottled water during 2015 in comparison with the previous year, in line with regional trends throughout the GCC region in which bottled water consumption has been on the rise.
The amount of bottled water purchased by Saudi residents reached 10 billion liters in total. In parallel, the consumption of soft drinks in the Kingdom has dropped from first place to third in terms of the types of drinks consumed country-wide.
The rise in bottled water consumption comes in conjunction with a global trend, as reports indicate an increase in bottled water purchases around the globe.
A detailed report on the bottled water industry in the Gulf indicated that consumption of bottled water in the GCC has increased region-wide. The report, published by the Gulf Organization for Industrial Consulting (GOIC), expects that the GCC’s consumption of bottled water will reach about 21 billion liters by 2020, more than half of the amount consumed by the Kingdom currently, which is 13 billion liters.
The report’s figures showed that the Kingdom currently consumes about 10 billion liters of bottled water (as of 2015) in comparison with a 15 billion liters among the GCC countries.
The Emirates ranked second in terms of consumption with 3.5 billion liters, and Qatar came in third with 540 million liters.
