LOS ANGELES: Wesley Bryan fired a seven-under 64 to take a one stroke lead in the second round of the rain-suspended PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic on Friday.
The 26-year-old American is playing in his first PGA Tour event since earning his PGA card. He received the card after winning three times on the Web.com Tour this year.
“Been hitting the ball great all week, really the last couple weeks,” said Bryan. “Struck it well, made the putts when I needed to, and here we are.”
Bryan recorded seven birdies in his bogey-free round and is 12-under through two rounds on the Deere Run course in Silvis, Illinois.
“Knowing that I’ve been there and been able to hit the shots under pressure, I think should help me out moving forward,” Bryan said.
Bryan began his second round at No. 10 and birdied Nos. 12, 13, 14, 17 and 18 en route to a 31 on the back nine.
Steve Marino carded a 65 to get to 11-under while first-round co-leader Tom Gillis shot 68 after his opening 64 and is another shot back at 10-under.
More than seven centimeters (three inches) of rain fell on the course, and 39 golfers did not begin their second rounds Friday.
Kyle Stanley shot 66 and is alone in fourth at nine-under, while five golfers are at eight-under, including Kelly Kraft, who has three holes remaining on his second round.
