JEDDAH: The United Nations has failed to achieve success in delivering humanitarian aid to the war-affected Yemenis in the face of a siege by rebels in strife-torn areas, the National Society for Human Rights (NSHR) has said.
“However, Saudi Arabia has achieved success by consistently aiding the Yemenis despite obstacles thrown in the way by the Houthis and rebels loyal to ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh,” Mufleh Al-Qahtani, president of the Saudi-based NSHR, said.
“There is some malfunction in the international system for providing assistance to the Yemeni people. The UN is falling short in this area. But the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) has done a commendable job in this regard,” he said.
“As part of Saudi Arabia’s role in helping Yemenis, in cooperation with the Arab coalition forces, the King Salman center has implemented a qualitative operation to break the siege on Taiz by dropping 40 tons of medical aid and relief materials in a single day on Jan. 13. A total of 140 tons of relief materials were dropped at different locations of the region.”
Al-Qahtani said that Saudi Arabia has also implemented over 20 medical programs and more than 16 million Yemenis are benefiting from them.
The Kingdom has provided 823 tons of medicines and medical supplies, in addition to equipping a number of hospitals and health centers in cooperation with more than 12 international and regional organizations, at a cost of $101 million, he said.
“The King Salman center supports the efforts made by the international organizations for the Yemeni people. The center has become a global platform for providing aid,” he said.
Al-Qahtani said the Kingdom is not only providing assistance to Yemenis, but has always extended humanitarian assistance to other countries around the world without boasting about it.
