RIYADH: Beginning the holy month of Ramadan, those citizens who have reached 20 years of age will have an option to obtain their passports either for a period of five years or 10 years, Maj. Gen. Sulaiman Yahya, director general of passports, said at a press conference held here on Wednesday.
He said that those who apply for a validity period of 10 years will not be eligible to include his or her dependents in the passport.
He also said that the design of the passport and its size has not been changed.
Last year, the General Directorate of Passports urged citizens to get separate passports since family travel documents are not accepted by some countries abroad.
Department spokesman Lt. Col. Ahmed bin Fahd Al-Luhaidan said many citizens have applied for separate passports for their family members because they could not get visas for some countries.
The department therefore urged citizens to get a passport for each family member. Citizens, he said, can use the Ebsher electronic system to renew or apply for new passports by visiting the website www.gdp.gov.sa.
In February, the Shoura Council approved a proposal to extend passport validity to 10 years from the current five-year period for citizens aged above 20 years.
