JEDDAH: Nearly 800 cars were reported stolen in different parts of the Kingdom during the month of April. This means that more than one car was stolen every hour.
Reports show that 36 percent of the stolen cars in April were retrieved, or about 289 cars. Riyadh reported the highest number of retrieved vehicles with 125 cars returned to owners. No stolen cars in Najran or the Northern Border Region were retrieved.
Studies carried out by the Crime Research Center at the Ministry of Interior show a large number of car thieves completed only primary schooling or lower levels of education.
They resort to theft in order to show off their skills and abilities. Other motivations include using stolen vehicles to carry out other crimes.
According to the General Directorate of Traffic, the new Basher system allows traffic patrols to record any traffic violations and document all information about the violation, including time and place. The system sends a text message directly to the violator with all details within three minutes.
The system allows for patrols to identify more violations and reduce their incidence, and is part of the directorate’s developmental plans in coordination with the National Information Center to reduce traffic violations and increase safety on the Kingdom’s roads.
