Pregnancy might seem like the perfect time to sit back and relax. You might feel more tired than usual, your back might ache, and your ankles might be swollen. Sitting around won't help. In fact, pregnancy can be a great time to get active — even if you haven't exercised in a while. Any type of heavy exercise can divert the blood flow from crucial areas, and most women that exercise on a regular basis should tone down their workout regimen during pregnancy.

Dr. Samina F. Shafi, Senior Specialist of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the International Medical Center said that it is very important for pregnant women to exercise regularly as long as there is no risk of injury. Swimming, Tai Chi, walking, Kegel and yoga are among popular exercise activities that are suitable for pregnant women. There are other forms of exercise such as weight lifting (up to 2.5 kg) that are acceptable as long as it isn't too strenuous. It is recommended to exercise regularly unless you have a medical condition that prevents it. If you are ever in doubt, you should consult your physician first.

Dr. Samina shed the light on the role of exercising in reducing pain and swellings around the ankle, promoting better sleep and waking up relaxed. Furthermore, women with normal pregnancy should get at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise, even if she was never fond of physical exercise. It is well known that exercise boosts your stamina and prevents gestational diabetes; it also helps reduce stress and anxiety.
According to Dr. Samina, pregnant women should drink plenty of fluids and eat light snack before and at the end of workout. It is better to avoid hot environments such as sauna, steam, and hot tubs. It is advised to wear loose cotton clothes and sneakers, however, walking and exercising is preferred to be indoor (e.g. malls) in order to make sure that you won’t be at risk of falls or injury. It is important when exercising to choose an even non-slippery surfaces like wood or carpeted floor without any inclines, soft and grassy tracks are acceptable too.

Dr. Samina concluded, exercising during pregnancy is one of the best things you can do for yourself and for your unborn baby. Your baby will reap some of the benefits, which is reason enough to exercise. The baby will be fit, healthier, smarter and less prone to colic. As long as you exercise safe and use good common sense, you'll do a world of good for your pregnancy.
