JEDDAH: Four Arab men have been arrested and referred to the Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution for allegedly setting fire to seven buses in Makkah recently.
The referral was made by Al-Kaakiyah police, with sources saying that eye witnesses and preliminary investigations have allegedly identified the men as the culprits.
The incident took place earlier this month, with the men thought to be part of a group of workers protesting their dismissal by Saudi Binladin Group.
Preliminary investigations revealed officials from the company allegedly cutting off water and electricity to their housing, prompting a number of workers to protest and setting the buses alight, a local publication reported Friday.
Lawyer Sultan Al-Harthi said that if found guilty the four men face jail, fines and deportation. They would still be charged even if the company drops charges against them, he was quoted as saying by a local publication on Friday.
Arab News reported recently that Saudi Binladin has stated that it would pay the salaries of 10,000 of its employees during the month of May.
