JEDDAH: Another fire broke out in a building in the historic area here Wednesday, the third such incident in five days.
The fire broke out in a deserted three-story building, said Col. Said Sarhan, spokesman of the Civil Defense for Makkah Region. When firefighters arrived, the blaze had spread to all the levels. No one was hurt, he said.
He said the firefighters were not able to enter the building because they feared the wooden roof might collapse on them. They used hoses to douse the fire from the outside, including the roofs of nearby buildings.
On Friday, a fire broke out in a four-story building and then on Monday there was one in a five-story building. The narrow alleyways in the historic area makes accessibility difficult for Civil Defense teams.
