JEDDAH: The British Consulate General and the British Council Jeddah honored 67 students for excelling in the Cambridge IGSCE and A level exams, during a ceremony at the consulate here recently.
The students, from from 15 schools in the western provinces of the Kingdom, were presented certificates and plaques. The categories were Best Across Awards, Top In the Country, Top in Jeddah, Top in the World and High Achievers.
Simon Lebus, chief executive of Cambridge Assessment, welcomed the guests, students, parents and teachers.
Speaking on the occasion, Philip Rylah, the British Council’s director of examinations for the Middle East and North Africa, appreciated the efforts of the consulate in making the event a success. He also hailed the teachers for their hard work that has resulted in the students’ achievements.
“British Council is UK’s organization for educational and cultural activities. Through a partnership spanning some 30 years, the council and Cambridge have been striving to foster talent and recognize outstanding achievements, in an effort to support society’s development,” he said.
He said that candidates who obtain Cambridge academic qualifications progress to higher learning in universities in Saudi Arabia, the UK and elsewhere and consistently perform at an exceptionally high level.
“These Cambridge exams are a great opportunity for students to compete with other students from around the world. Congratulation to all successful students on their wonderful academic achievements,” he said.
British Consul General Mohammed Shokat also congratulated the students, parents, schools and British Council. The UK continues to be proud of the standard of education it provides, and it is a great honor for the British Consulate to organize the event at its premises, he said.
The nine students in the western region who received Top in World category awards are Rehab Mohammed Amro (IGCSE first language Arabic), Maram Ismail Taha (IGCSE foreign language Arabic), Ruqayyah Ali Ahmed (IGCSE foreign language Arabic), Wijdan Hafeezullah Muhammad (IGCSE foreign language Arabic), Mahnoor Asghar (AL applied ICT), Sarangi Kavindya Handun Pathirana (AS Applied ICT), Ammar Anas Alsayed Mohamed Aboagwa (AS mathematics), Hasan Kamal (AS mathematics) and Hussein Mohamed Ali Genena (AS mathematics).
