Fraud in cosmetic products can invite jail up to 5 years

JEDDAH: Those found guilty of promoting fake or corrupt cosmetic products or committing any other malpractices face four penalties, including fines up to SR5 million or prison term not exceeding five years, according to the new regulations.
The violating facility will be closed down until the irregularities are corrected or the license will be revoked permanently, local media reported, citing the new rules which will come into effect six months from now.
The most serious violations, under the new rules, are cheating or fraud in the product itself, promoting fake, corrupt or expired products, or if the product is not consistent with the data listed or announced on the label, and the use of false information to promote for or demote a product.
“People or parties bringing into the Kingdom containers or covers of a cosmetic product for the purpose of cheating or manufacture, posses, sell, display or refill a certain cosmetic container or cover with the intent to cheat, or have submitted to the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) incorrect information on the cosmetic product,” the new regulations state.
The new regulations also state that an inspector must show his card before entering a facility for inspection and he is entitled to have access to the documents and records and can keep copies of them if necessary and take samples of the cosmetic products for analysis.
