RIYADH: Prominent Islamic scholar Ayed Al-Qarni, who was shot and wounded in the arm on Tuesday in the Philippines while delivering a lecture at a university, tweeted on Wednesday that he was in good health.
The popular Saudi scholar posted the message in Arabic, which said: “I bring good news to you that I am OK and well, thank God.” His tweet was re-tweeted 24,665 times in a few hours.
Hundreds of his followers from many parts of the world wished him a speedy recovery. Al-Qarni has over 12 million followers on Twitter.
Al-Qarni and a diplomat from the Saudi embassy in the Philippines were both wounded in a shooting as the duo left a university auditorium in the southern port city of Zamboanga, where he had been delivering a lecture.
Abdullah bin Nasir Al-Busairi, Saudi ambassador to the Philippines, visited the scholar at the Zamboanga City hospital. Al-Qarni was flown to Manila for further treatment.
Al-Qarni, 57, has a massive following in the Kingdom and the Muslim world. He is the author of several influential books including the best seller La Tahzan (Don’t Be Sad), with millions of copies sold worldwide.
Significantly, French academic Stephane Lacroix included him in his book “Awakening Islam” as “the most famous” of Saudi preachers.
