DAMMAM: The Saudi Society for Diabetes and Endocrine in the Eastern Province unveiled that those who have Type II diabetes maybe 11-20 percent more likely to get different forms of cancers.
On the International Day of Cancer, Director-General of the Society, Dr. Kamel Salamah spoke of the care that must be taken to reduce the dangers of both cancer and Type II diabetes, as well as other harmful diseases such as heart failure and strokes.
He used the Ministry of Health’s slogan “40 Protection 40 healing” during the “Gulf Cancer Awareness Week” to support individual, families, societies and government parties in their effort to reduce the rates of the aforementioned diseases, as well as to protect health and fight against obesity. Obesity is regarded as one of the leading factors of Type II diabetes and cancer.
Dr Salameh said smoking should be avoided, especially through avoidance of direct smoking. He advocated for the creation of ‘non-smoking zones’ in homes, business complexes and markets to reduce the likelihood of second-hand smoke. To stay healthy, people should also practice sports, at least 30 to 45 minutes a day or 5 times a week, and eat healthy foods including vegetables, healthy oils, and non-salted nuts.
