CITC puts curbs on spam messages

JEDDAH: The Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC) has banned unsolicited messages through e-mail or mobile phones between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.
No sender may send electronic messages unless there is prior permission from the receiver, it said, local media reported on Saturday.
Sources in the CITC were quoted as saying that the commission is taking the necessary steps to stop the barrage of SMS messages that are sent to people.
The move is also aimed at SMS providers who, the CITC states, must stop using their networks to send out mass messaging and to take preventative action against those found doing the same.
There is a new free service that allow users to refuse to receive voice SMS or through different means or all e-mails, and this can be used by people, the report added.
