TAIF: Two youths have been taken into custody for alleged harassing a girl in Taif, police said on Monday.
Col. Atti Al-Qurashi of the Makkah police told local media that the suspects are now under investigation. A video clip circulated on social media showed two men following the girl outside a mall and one of them tried to touch her.
Brig. Gen. Abdur Rahman, director of Taif police, had earlier tasked a team to collect and analyze all information about the video clip, which had gone viral on social media after a similar incident that took place at the Jeddah corniche.
A number of young men are also under investigation for alleged involvement in the Jeddah incident, which evoked angry reactions from citizens who had seen young men hooting as they tried to mob two girls who have rode on a four-wheel motorbike at the corniche.
The incident had fueled a public debate, with some people accusing the young men of lacking decency and violating Islamic teachings on respect. On the other side of the coin, the argument is that the girls had it coming when they ventured into a domain of boys without any guardian.
