JEDDAH: Justice Minister Walid Al-Samaani was taken aback by the absence of most of the judges and other staff during office hours at a court in Makkah last week.
The minister discovered the absence during a surprise visit to the court, reported an online newspaper on Wednesday.
The newspaper, quoting sources, said that when Al-Samaani came to the court, he observed that the functioning had almost come to a halt during Ramadan. Only a few judges and other employees were present.
The minister's conversation with a court employee, as reported by the online newspaper, was interesting and is worth pondering over. Minister: "Where are the employees?" Employee: "Nobody is here. What do you want?" Minister: "I need judges." Employee: "There is no employee, no judge at present."
A visibly exasperated Al-Samaani left the court, said the newspaper.
