JEDDAH: Minutes after the issuance of the Royal Decree appointing Majed Al-Hogail as housing minister, the number of followers on his Twitter handle,
@majedalhogail, jumped from 3,122 to 54,000.
Local media surfed the profile of the minister who joined Twitter in 2011 and has now posted over 3,742 tweets. In these tweets, the minister stated that imposing fees on vacant lands will not solve the housing problem in the Kingdom.
He said that the owners of vacant lands retain them because there are no other investment alternatives, in addition to there being a lack of incentive to build on them.
On Sept. 28, he wrote: “I admit that property prices are rising and the solution is to partner with the private sector to be able to succeed.”
He added in another tweet in April, “Good efforts on the part of the Ministry of Housing, because this is the start of the real concept of partnership between the private and public sector.” On Jan. 5, he wrote: “The demand for housing will grow in the Kingdom during the next few years.”
The housing crisis in the Kingdom is one of the most important issues in society, as many have been waiting for years for the government to come up with radical solutions.
The new housing minister was previously a member of the board of directors of a number of companies, including Al-Jazira Bank, Wafa Insurance Company, Nas Holding and Rafal Real Estate Development Company.
