7 workers killed in Qassim building collapse

Seven workers were killed, six injured and at least 15 were still trapped after a convention center collapsed during construction in Saudi Arabia on Monday, Al-Arabiya channel reported.
Medics were initially told that about 50 workers were caught under concrete in the site at a university in Qassim, northwest of the capital Riyadh.
But they found “seven persons including six Asians and an Egyptian dead” and took six others with serious injuries to hospital, according to information given by Qassim University and the Saudi Red Crescent Authority.
Eight others were slightly hurt and about 15 others were believed still trapped, he said.
Bandar Al-Roshodi, the university spokesman, told Saudi television news channel Al-Ekhbariya that the workers on the site were mostly from Pakistan.
Pictures from the scene showed a sprawling but low-level construction site, where many steel support beams had collapsed along with other parts of the structure.
Qassim Gov. Prince Faisal bin Mishaal visited the site to oversee rescue operations being carried out by the Civil Defense Department, Saudi Red Crescent Authority, patrol police and other security agencies.
Saudi bloggers urged punitive action against the contracting company and government watch on such public projects.
