The 60th anniversary of the Sunni Yuvajana Sangham (SYS), youth wing of the All India Sunni Jamiyyathul Ulama led by Sheikh Abu Bakr Ahmed, concluded in Malappuram, Indian state of Kerala.
Sultan Muhammad Al-Shahi and Sheikh Mahmood Kareeshan, prominent Indian Islamic figures, were chief guests at the valedictory conference, which was attended by more than half a million people.
Sheikh Yousuf Al-Rifae, chief justice of Kuwait’s Supreme Court, inaugurated valedictory conference.
Prominent personalities from Kerala state, including Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, addressed the session.
Sheikh Ahmed highlighted the atrocities committed by the Islamic State (IS) militant group in the Middle East. He urged the Muslim community of Kerala to renew their pledge against terrorism and intolerance.
The conference unveiled an ambitious 10-year action plan aimed at comprehensive growth of society at all levels, including socio-religious development.
Condemning the beheading of Egyptian Christians in Libya, Sheikh Mahmood said: “Extermists are the enemy of Islam. IS is trying to defame a religion that advocates peace and tolerance.” He also condemned the slaughtering of children in a school in Pakistan’s Peshawar.
Muslims constitute 26.6 percent of Kerala’s 33.4 million population.
