800 students in Jazan at risk from traffic mishaps

More than 800 students face the danger of being run over because their educational complex is located on four major roads.
Saeed Awaji, student guidance officer in the Al-Khalidiya school complex, said the school in west of Sybia Governorate, is located on four major roads with more than 800 students, and around 56 employees. The complex’s administration has addressed the municipality, and traffic and education directorates more than four years ago, about taking protective steps like speed bumps for the students, but these demands have not been answered by relevant authorities.
Al-Hassan Shoukan, Ibrahim Saeed and Mohammad Al-Jaafari said the school children, especially those in primary schools, cross the streets every day, which puts them in danger.
“We hope our officials will move toward protecting the souls of our children,” they said.
They pointed out that the complex streets have already witnessed tragic traffic accidents because of high speeds and recklessness by drivers, especially since the complex is located in an area with dense population.
The area covers Al-Arouj, Al-Khalidyah and Halat Mshari.
The complex is 700 meters away from the popular Tuesday Market and 500 meters from the road that leads to Al-Qouz coast in the north. The complex is, therefore, congested with vehicles that form a real danger to students when they go to and return from their schools.
Attas Daifallah hoped the governorate’s traffic directorate will provide traffic patrol cars next to the complex to ensure smooth traffic movement and safe crossing for children.
Tareq Rifai, press spokesman in Jazan, said the school administration should address the governorate so that a committee for the governorate, traffic and the municipality will be formed to study the application and decide whether or not the location is in need of speed bumps or not.
