A citizen in the Eastern Province recently found a huge dead turtle at Alkhobar’s Half Moon Bay, bringing to nine the number of these animals that have washed up on the beach since August.
“I found it while out walking at Half Moon Bay, but I was not able to move it,” he said.
Spokesman for the Border Guard, Capt. Omar Al-Aklabi, said that animals occasionally die because of atmospheric changes. He said the fisheries department would launch an investigation. He confirmed that nine had been found dead on the beach since August.
There have been many recorded deaths of animals of Eastern Province beaches, which experts believe are linked to lack of oxygen, atmospheric changes and pollution.
These include the coastlines of Jubail, Ras Tanura, and Alkhobar. Most involved large mammals such as dolphins and whales. Seventeen turtles and three reportedly dolphins died on Al-Fanateer beach in Jubail Industrial City a few years ago due to temperature changes.
