International experts in waste management expressed their admiration for the rapid developmental projects in Makkah and hailed Saudi authorities for the measures taken for environmental protection during an international event held recently.
The Pollutec International Conference and Exhibition, which brings together experts from 116 countries to discuss innovative solutions to minimize the impact of human activities on the environment, was concluded in France on Friday. The Makkah Municipality had taken part this year.
“Several experts expressed a desire to know about the waste collection and sustainable environment measures that the Kingdom undertakes during the Haj season.
“Many visitors at the event were curious about the developmental activities which will contribute to increase the number of pilgrims and visitors to the holy city,” said an official from the Makkah Municipality.
“Our pavilion which featured development projects at the Grand Mosque drew huge crowds who were keen to learn about the pilgrimage process,” said Mohammed Abdul Rahman Al-Maruqi, director of environment and general cleaning department of Makkah Municipality, on Saturday.
He said that foreign experts were wondering about the effective environmental protection mechanism of the municipality following the annual gathering of the largest number of people on earth over a period of five days.
Al-Maruqi said that 600 people per day on average visited the Makkah Pavilion and showed their keenness to know about the pilgrimage and the King Abdullah Project for the Two Holy Mosques expansion to accommodate the anticipated growth in the number of pilgrims in the coming years.
The director lauded the support of Prince Mansour bin Miteb, municipal affairs minister; and Osama Al-Bar, Makkah mayor, in this regard.
He added that the municipality benefitted from the opportunity for information-exchange with international counterparts at the event.
“We presented our existing operation methods and also asked experts from across the globe to share more advanced innovative technologies in waste management,” he added.
