The Saudi Council of Engineers (SCE) and the heads of affiliated expatriate engineering groups met recently to discuss issues affecting the profession.
The meeting presided over by SCE Secretary General Ghazi Alabasi discussed the difficulty of getting approval by the government authorities for conducting events especially with female participation.
The SCE agreed that such events could get the approval of the concerned authorities if they were notified well in advance.
It also discussed the possibility of utilizing conference halls of the chambers of commerce and universities to save money and proposed to invite Saudi and foreign expat engineers to participate in ceremonies, lectures, symposia, conferences, workshops, and training courses.
The holding of sports competitions like football, volleyball, table tennis and basketball was discussed as well as the need to send messages to members translated in English and to get the website contents in English.
A proposal was made for low-cost or free training courses as part of the professional development of engineers regardless of nationality, which is to be considered as the benefit of SCE membership.
The preparation of a presentation on SCE in English and Arabic which could be used by the expatriate engineering community heads to propagate SCE messages among their groups during gatherings was considered.
The SCE further discussed the possibility for expat engineers to write for Al-Mohandis Magazine and the necessity of the cooperation of all professionals to weed out fake engineers and unrecognized certificate holders to safeguard the reputation of the engineering fraternity in the Kingdom.
The attendees suggested that a meeting be held every two or three months.
Also present in the meeting held at the SCE headquarters were Mario Balboa of the Philippine Council of Engineers & Architects (PCEA), Medhet Omar (Egyptian Engineering Association), Munter Mushtaha (Jordan Engineers Association) and Jaleel Hasan (Pakistan Engineering Council).
