Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah has given a stern warning to world leaders, saying that terrorism would hit their countries sooner or later if they fail to take strong and speedy action to exterminate terrorism.
Addressing foreign ambassadors accredited to the Kingdom, he said terrorism, which has no borders, would soon spread to Europe and the US unless it is quickly dealt with in the Middle East.
“I ask you to convey this message to your leaders... Terrorism, at this time, is an evil force that must be fought with wisdom and speed,” the king told the ambassadors on Friday night.
“If neglected, I am sure it will arrive in Europe within a month and in America the month after that,” the Saudi Press Agency quoted the king as saying.
He was apparently referring to the threat posed by Al-Qaeda, the Islamic State and other terrorist groups.
Saudi Arabia shares an 800-km border with Iraq, where Islamic State militants and other radical groups have seized towns and cities.
Riyadh has long expressed fears of being targeted by militants, including some of its citizens. Earlier this year, the king issued a decree imposing long jail terms for Saudi nationals taking part in violence abroad.
King Abdullah told the ambassadors: “My dear brothers, greetings from your friends, the people of Saudi Arabia…You are all aware of the terrorism that takes place these days and we should all unite to combat terrorism firmly, wisely, and quickly.”
He said the Kingdom had given $100 million to the International Counterterrorism Center at the United Nations as part of its efforts to fight terror, while stressing the need to combat terrorism quickly and using all available resources.
“I have noticed that most of you have not talked about this issue until now; this is not at all acceptable for the protection of humanity and human rights because these terrorists do not respect humanity. You have witnessed them cutting off people’s heads and kids hold them while walking in the streets,” he said.
“These are terrible and heartbreaking acts that contradict God’s words. If a man kills another person anywhere in the world, it is as though he has killed all human beings in the eyes of God. So what, then, should be said about those who kill day and night, even those among them?” the king asked.
